When selecting an access control system, the credential type - the method employees use to prove their identity at the door - is the most consequential hardware decision you will make. NFC Cards and Fobs

NFC credentials are the most widely deployed access control technology in commercial buildings. An employee taps a card or fob against a reader and the door unlocks. Fingerprint Biometrics

Fingerprint readers match a live scan against an enrolled template. The credential is the person - it cannot be lost, shared, or forgotten. False accept rates on modern sensors are below 0.001% at standard security thresholds.

Where Fingerprint Makes Sense

  • High-security areas such as server rooms, pharmacies, or financial back offices where shared credentials represent a meaningful risk.
  • Time and attendance, where fingerprint verification directly eliminates buddy punching.
  • Environments where cards would be a nuisance - manufacturing floors, kitchens, labs.

Fingerprint Weaknesses

Enrollment takes two to three minutes per employee. Readers struggle with worn or damaged fingerprints. Some jurisdictions have specific biometric data privacy laws that require explicit consent.

Face Recognition

Modern 3D infrared face readers operate in under one second, work in variable lighting, and are not fooled by photographs. They are the best option for touchless access - relevant in food production, medical environments, and hygiene-sensitive operations.

Where Face Recognition Makes Sense

  • Environments requiring touchless operation.
  • High-traffic doors where fingerprint readers create queues.
  • Visitor-facing entries where card enrollment is impractical.

Face Recognition Weaknesses

Hardware costs more than fingerprint readers - expect \ to \ per device. Regulatory scrutiny around facial recognition is increasing in the EU and several US states.

How to Choose

The practical answer for most businesses is a combination. Use NFC cards for general office access and biometric for high-security zones and time clock stations. This gives convenience at scale while maintaining strong verification where it matters.
